The former house of George and Winona Kirk sits quietly, much of its furniture under synthetic dust cloths. The light of an Iowa morning is diffuse as the polarized glass of the windows keeps the rooms bright but not too much so. The hum of the household control system is faint, and outside there is only the distant buzz of automated tractors a kilometer away.

The back door opens, but there's no one outside. For a moment, the noise and bustle of a bar can be hear, the scents of beer and wine and people wafting through. Two people enter, and let the door close. The room is again silent.

"Welcome to Iowa, Teyla." Jim smiles at his guest as their eyes adjust to the light of the large kitchen.

Teyla smiles and closes her eyes for just a moment, reveling in the feeling of being somewhere that is not the Bar.

"Thank you, Jim," she says, quietly but sincerely.

"Do you want a drink? The control system usually leaves the water and some basic food services running, in case someone drops by." Though that would be the extent of the food here.

"A drink would be lovely, thank you." She turns slowly, taking in the kitchen.

The furniture is nothing like the decor in the Bar, but if Teyla had ever seen a 21st century kitchen, in a suite at the Bar or anywhere else, she would recognize this room as being of the same type. There's a stove, a refrigerator, a small table, a pantry.

"I'm sorry that there isn't much else, " Jim says as he gets two glasses and then turns on the drink station. "But no one's lived here in some time.

"Water, or do you have another preference?"

"Just water is fine." She has only ever seen a 21st century kitchen in films, but it's very much as she'd expected it to be.

"This is where you grew up?"

He gets the water from a tap that looks like a tap, though there is a vaguely mechanical noise when it flows, and it has push buttons.

"Till I was 14, I lived only here. At that point, I joined my father on a few missions as a student seeing the galaxy. But even then, this was home until I started in the Academy." Jim hands Teyla the glass and sits on a small chair.

Teyla takes the glass and sits as well. "Is not 14 quite young to begin traveling to other worlds?"

"Yes. But...well, I was already on the fast path to the Academy. And my father was...determined.

"And in retrospect, I probably was too young. He took me to one trouble spot that both of us were lucky to get out of. And while I learned a lot about the limits of both force and diplomacy, I also saw things that a boy that age shouldn't see." He isn't distressed by this. Not anymore, not since he made his last peace with Kodos the Executioner.

She smiles softly. "But those experiences have shaped the man you are today. Many boys see things they should not at their ages."

"That is true, Teyla. And I know I wouldn't trade it for anything. It, or the chance to travel with my father." He finishes his water. "Shall I give you the three credit tour?"

Teyla grins and finishes hers as well. "Please."

Jim offers his arm to Teyla. "Well, you can see this is the kitchen. To some degree, it was my mother's domain. Which was exceedingly old-fashioned - some out of the 20th century, in fact - but she felt comfortable here."

Teyla takes his arm, glancing around the kitchen. She can place most of the appliances with their functions, but it still all holds a measure of strangeness for her. "Do you have many memories of her here?"

"A few. She liked to bake pies. She claimed that she had a recipe that went back to the 20th century for apple pie. And she used to manage the farm's affairs from the data terminal in the table." A glance at that table will reveal that a flat viewscreen is built in, next to a small trackball. "I suppose that's where I got my own resistance to having a real office on my ship."

Jim guides Teyla towards a small hallway, where a few places abandoned by picture frames are hard to miss.

"What used to hang here?" she asks, tracing the outlines of the frames along the wall.

"Family holos. I took them with me to San Francisco recently." He studies the wall a bit. "My parents were here...there was a shot of all four of us here...and Mom kept the photo of me, Sam and her at my graduation her."

"Holos?" Photographs she's heard of. Holos, not so much.

"Holographic images, stored on memory plastic. I guess someone from the Earth of your time would compare them with photographs. These last much longer, and don't fade with time." Though eventually, there is a chance of hardware or software collapse.

"Are they still images as in photographs, or do they move?"

Someone on the base made the mistake of lending Teyla a Harry Potter book or two.

"They're still, though there are holos that move. Though would use a different display medium, and use more power." He moves along through the hall, and the front of the staircase and two archways come into view. "I think Mom liked the still kind better, anyway. It was...calmer."

"I can imagine it would make the hallway a bit...overwhelming."

"Especially since Kirks almost never stood still. To get us to pose for anything was an achievement." They approach the archway on the right. "This the dining room." The first glance reveals a large room with a minimum of furniture. While the table can seat 10, it seems simple and spare.

Teyla smiles at this. "You were a restless family."

She looks into the dining room. "It's so spacious."

"Very. Mom had a hard enough time keeping us in the same room, let alone the same planet." The lights, dim for daylight, turn on as Jim and Teyla enter. "This house dates back to a time when houses tended to large. These days, most homes are on the smaller side on Earth. To make more room for both people and the surroundings.

"I always felt this room was too large. My parents did most of their entertaining at HQ."

"Did they do much entertaining?"
